AVA COULD BARELY BREATHE WHEN SHE landed in the straw next to Griffin a second time. Even though it was cold outside, the barn was steamy, and she was a sweaty mess.

“No feelings, right?” she asked when she could form words.

“No feelings.” Griffin’s eyes were closed, as if he were preparing for a nap. That allowed Ava to study his profile without his staring back.

Why does he have to be so hot? His skin was like satin, and his dark hair felt like silk when she ran her fingers through it. His body was both soft and hard, thanks to his muscles. And that lowdown squirming feeling that threatened to knock her over whenever she was in close proximity to him—that was another problem entirely. They were definitely in more than a sex-buddies situation. Yet she couldn’t say those words out loud. If she did, everything would be over. As hard as it was for her to admit, she didn’t want it to be over.

“You’re basically a sex toy to me,” Ava lied. “Actually, I have more feelings for my vibrator than you because he’s been around longer and has come through in a number of difficult situations.”

Griffin smiled, lacing his fingers with hers as they synced their breathing. “I’m glad you don’t have feelings for me.”

“You’re no different from some random stranger on the street.”

Griffin arched an eyebrow. “That fills me with concern. Do you do this with random people on the street often?”

“No, but they’re not as hot as you. They don’t have eight abs.”

“Good to know that my hard work is what put me over the top.”

“Yeah.” Ava could’ve released his hand to scratch the itch on the side of her nose, but she didn’t. She used her free hand and kept contact with him. “We need to come up with rules,” she decided.

“Rules?” Griffin opened one eye. “What sort of rules?”

“Well, this isn’t a relationship.” Even though her heart screamed in protest, Ava refused to back down from that assertion. She wasn’t in a place mentally where a relationship made sense. She was supposed to be able to buy the farm, renovate it, then find the perfect boyfriend once all that hard work had been carried out.

“We both agree it’s not a relationship,” Griffin said stiffly. “Don’t suddenly get weird. I haven’t changed my mind on that.”

“I know. It’s just … we have to be careful. If the people in town get wind that we’re doing … well, this, then we’re never going to hear the end of it. We’re going to start getting pressure on all sides. They’re not going to understand the sex-buddies thing.”

“Yeah, Nick and Bear already think there’s something going on.”

“That’s because Maya and Lindsey think there’s something going on,” Ava replied. “They’re the ones who filled their significant others’ heads with nonsense.”

“I think Bear and Nick think for themselves on that stuff, and they’ve made more than a few comments to me.”

“Well, then we have to make sure they don’t get the wrong idea on that,” Ava insisted.
